Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for grilling)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Gather all ingredients. Slice the onions and set aside cheese and bread.
  2. Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter. Add onions; sauté until golden brown (about 10 minutes).
  3. Form Patties: Season ground beef with salt and pepper; form into patties larger than the bread.
  4. Grill Patties: Increase skillet heat to medium-high. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side, adding cheese on top during the last minute to melt.
  5. Assemble Sandwich: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place one slice in a skillet over medium heat, add a patty with melted cheese, some onions, then top with another slice (butter side up). Grill until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  6. Slice and Serve: Remove from heat, slice in half diagonally, and serve hot with pickles or fries.
